Hey, it's Dave. Here's a blind spot. It's goal setting. As a matter of fact, it's failing to tie together corporate goals and individual goals. Each one of us as a leader have goals. We have our company goals, we have our departmental goals, and hopefully, we drill down to our individual contributor goals. We all do that, and I'm hoping that we do that well.
Here's the blind spot. Those goals are typically not tied into my personal goals as an individual contributor in your company. So what I want you to do is when you figure out what that person's personal goals are within the organization, so for instance, let's say that I had a one million dollar quota, if we're using sales as an example. Based on that example, I may get a $10,000 commission check.
The question is, what would you do with the $10,000? Because you can tell me that I have a one million dollar quota, and I'll work as hard as I can, because I'm competitive and I want to succeed, but will I work harder if were to just take that $10,000 and put some towards my kid's education and some towards my retirement? Now, I am working for you, but more importantly, I'm working for my children and I'm working for my future. That's the blind spot.
Here's how you figure out if you have it. Write down three or four employees that work for you, and then next to their name, jot down three or four, maybe two, personal goals that they have. If you can't do that, you have a blind spot. If you can, when you tie personal and professional goals together, your productivity will go through the roof. Good luck.
